Brain & Mind Love & Sex

Woman breaking: Jurassic world style

Watching “Jurassic world” in the theatre was more interesting in terms of people-watching than dinosaur-watching, as it clearly proved that Mills & Boon story-lines have endured all possible “modernization” of society! Public response to conversion, or rather breaking of a strong corporate executive woman into a helpless damsel-in-distress required to be saved (obviously) by a man was clearly suggestive of what most men (and many women) think what a “real” woman should be like.

This brings forth a very interesting question: Even after women world over proving their mettle as successful corporate executives, why are we comfortable with them only when they are broken back to return to the traditional mold?

When a futuristic sci-fi movie produced in liberated West carries underlying theme of “reforming” a corporate bitch into a family-loving woman, it clearly indicates that modern working woman is an uncomfortable reality, even for western culture. This interesting (annoying, if you are a woman) phenomenon has its roots in how human brain perceives a female of its species.

Sex and sexes, unfortunately, have arrived a lot before neural networks evolved to neocortical sophistication and hence their cognition in brain starts at a very primordial level. You could be a pundit or a prude, but when your brain encounters a member of opposite sex, it first registers him/her as, well, him/her. So, even if we meet Obama or Elizabeth-II, our brain will start with cognizing them as man and woman and not president and queen. It is clear that, for our brain, sex comes first, always.

After the primary identification of sex, what brain appears to be doing next is the root-cause of all problems that human females are encountering in modern world. When human brain constructs a male, he is cognized as a whole: a sum total of who he is, as a person, as a mind and as an achiever; but, when it comes to a woman, brain shifts from this holistic view to study in parts. A woman is cognized by brain in bits and pieces: a pretty face or long legs and not the entire package. This bad start in brain has led females of our species to be more objectified than males.

It is useful for few, who can earn millions from selling images of their faces or other body parts, but it has prevented the entire gender from having a level playing field with the males in getting recognition of more dimensions of their persona. It is a brain-trap that females are unable to escape even after growing into a far wider spectrum of being in recent times. All their apparent achievements may be celebrated by us in conversations, human brain refuses to sync with the new age woman.

Our out-of-sync brain is one of the biggest problems of our era. As technology is moving us away from the animal-like brute-force-driven hierarchy, females are finding different roles beyond that of a mother and a nurturer, while the old brain circuits have no real way to change fast enough to be able to reconcile with this change in reality. The only way brain responds to such uncomfortable changes is to find them annoying and show preference for its innate understanding of a female over the one wearing pants.

Fortunately, all is not lost for modern women, as our out-of-sync brain has developed a safe-guard, a new brain: the neo-cortex. This allows us to rise above the automated brain processes, if we are willing to do so. Female of our species needs only one small help that neo-cortex can deliver. They need cognition beyond couple of body-parts. It is possible, if we try. We can move away from Jurassic world mindset and embrace the new age woman for what she is, a complete person.

I am happy to admit that I have managed surviving till now with minimum effort as all my intellect has be used to avoid doing anything meaningful. As I needed to while all the free time I generated in course of being lazy, science has been my favorite muse that I have enjoyed company of. As an effort to kill time (in a way, to get even with it) one fine day I decided to write a science column, more for my personal amusement than to attract readers. After getting educated about the attention span of modern readers from my editor, it became more like a challenge to tackle esoteric subjects in 600 words that I have managed to remain interested in for more than a year now. I do not want to add my worldly profile here as these are ideas that need to be considered only on the merits they carry and not as an opinion of a certain human being.
